Dancehall superstar Shatta Wale is set to swap the stage for the lecture hall after accepting an invitation to speak to students at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on music marketing, branding, and the business of entertainment.

The invitation came from UPSA Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, who expressed his desire for the award-winning musician to share his entrepreneurial journey and practical knowledge of building a successful music career. According to the Vice-Chancellor, Shatta Wale’s experience in using the internet to market his music and establish a powerful personal brand offers valuable lessons for students, particularly those interested in marketing, branding, and the creative economy.

“I want Shatta Wale to come and address UPSA students. I’d love for him to share his business knowledge and how he learned to make music using the internet,” Professor Mawutor stated.

A Testament to Real-World Success

The invitation is particularly noteworthy given that Shatta Wale, a Ga man who holds no university degree or master’s in entrepreneurship or business, is being called upon to address university students based solely on what he has achieved in the real world. Sometimes, wisdom, experience, and execution speak louder than certificates.

Shatta Wale’s rise to stardom was built on years of self-learning and dedication in Ghana, not from travelling abroad. He has revealed that he spent seven years in a small room teaching himself music production, relying heavily on online resources. “I was in a small room. I learned the beats all by myself, on my own, on the internet,” he disclosed.

Beyond his music career, Shatta Wale has demonstrated remarkable entrepreneurial acumen. He has established multiple business ventures, including his ride-hailing company Shaxi, into which he reportedly invested over $2 million. His business operations have also developed partnerships and investment links in countries including China and the United Arab Emirates. His business model—built on branding, diversification, and digital engagement—has been described as “calculated resilience” that turns everything from shows and endorsements to merchandise and digital streams into revenue opportunities.

Entrepreneurship at the Heart of UPSA’s Vision

Professor Mawutor, who was sworn in as UPSA Vice-Chancellor in December 2024, has made entrepreneurship and innovation a cornerstone of his administration. He has noted that out of 200,000 graduates from Ghanaian universities, only 10% secure jobs within a year after graduation. This reality has driven his quest to resource UPSA students to become job creators rather than job seekers.

Under his leadership, UPSA has introduced two compulsory courses—Fundamentals of Ethics and Introduction to Entrepreneurship—for all first-year students. The university has also established a Center for Entrepreneurial Development for Students and made entrepreneurship a mandatory component of its academic structure.

Response and Anticipation

Responding to the invitation, Shatta Wale gladly accepted and hinted that he would be visiting the university in September. “Thank you, Vice Chancellor. I will be there,” he wrote.

The announcement has generated excitement among fans and students, with many looking forward to hearing firsthand how the self-acclaimed Dancehall King built one of Ghana’s most influential music brands through digital platforms, strategic marketing, and consistent audience engagement.

For UPSA students, the upcoming lecture promises a rare opportunity to learn from someone who has turned talent into a thriving enterprise—proving that in today’s digital economy, success is not always measured by certificates, but by the ability to innovate, execute, and create value.
