Sadio Mané, Senegal’s all-time leading goalscorer and one of Africa’s greatest footballers, has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing down the curtain on a legendary 14-year career with the Lions of Teranga.
The 34-year-old Al-Nassr forward confirmed his decision in an emotional statement carried by the Senegalese daily Le Quotidien, days after Senegal’s heartbreaking round-of-32 exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they fell 3-2 to Belgium in extra time after squandering a 2-0 lead.
“Know that I sacrificed everything for this flag,” Mané wrote in his farewell message. “I gave the very best of myself and always fought fiercely for our homeland. Your constant support has been the driving force behind my success.”
A Legacy Etched in Gold
Mané leaves the national team having amassed 130 caps and scoring 54 goals since his senior debut in 2012, making him Senegal’s all-time top goalscorer — a record he claimed after surpassing Henri Camara’s previous mark of 32 goals.
His greatest achievement came in 2021 when he captained Senegal to their historic first Africa Cup of Nations title, scoring the winning penalty in the final against Egypt. He added a second continental crown in 2025, leading the Lions to a 1-0 victory over hosts Morocco in the final, though the title was later stripped by CAF following a dispute.
A two-time African Player of the Year, Mané also reached the AFCON final in 2019 and represented Senegal at the 2018 and 2026 World Cups. At club level, his trophy cabinet includes the 2019 UEFA Champions League with Liverpool and a Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich during the 2022-23 season.
A Bittersweet Final Chapter
Senegal’s 2026 World Cup campaign was fraught with difficulties. Drawn into a punishing group alongside France, Norway, and Iraq, the Lions opened with defeats to France (3-1) and Norway (3-2) before scraping through as one of the best third-placed teams. Their tournament ended in cruel fashion against Belgium, having led 2-0 with just five minutes remaining before conceding three times in extra time.
Off the pitch, the campaign was overshadowed by turmoil within the Senegalese Football Federation, with reports of unpaid player bonuses, substandard accommodation at the team’s US base camp, and head coach Pape Thiaw entering the tournament without a signed contract.
‘I Will Continue to Serve My Country’
Despite stepping away as a player, Mané made it clear that his commitment to Senegalese football remains unwavering.
“Tomorrow, I will gladly put my experience at the service of the nation,” he declared. “Whether within a coaching staff, on the bench as a coach, or within the administrative structures.”
The former Liverpool and Bayern Munich star remains under contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr until 2027 and is expected to continue his club career.
Mané’s departure marks the end of an era for Senegalese football. As the talisman and captain of the nation’s golden generation, he leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond statistics — one of sacrifice, leadership, and unwavering pride in the colours of the Lions of Teranga.
