President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana has commenced a historic four-day state visit to Jamaica, arriving on August 2, 2026, to a formal welcome ceremony that signals a new chapter in Africa-Caribbean relations . The visit, which runs through August 5, comes at the invitation of Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness and coincides with Jamaica’s Emancipation and Independence celebrations .
The official proceedings began Monday morning with a ceremonial welcome on the lawns of King’s House, followed by a courtesy call on His Excellency the Most Honourable Sir Patrick Allen, Governor-General of Jamaica, and Lady Allen . President Mahama’s itinerary includes high-level bilateral talks with Prime Minister Holness, a media briefing, and a working luncheon at the Kingston Wharves .
This state visit is the culmination of recent efforts to revitalize the relationship between the two nations. In May 2026, Ghana and Jamaica revived the Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC) after a 21-year hiatus, signing landmark agreements on health, defence, education, and culture . Notably, a bilateral health workforce mobility agreement is expected to facilitate the deployment of Ghanaian health professionals to Jamaica to address workforce shortages, with the first batch anticipated later this year .
The visit builds on a foundation of shared history and Pan-African solidarity. Ghana and Jamaica established diplomatic relations in 1958, and their modern partnership is rooted in the ideals of Pan-African visionaries like Jamaica’s Marcus Garvey and Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah . This solidarity was demonstrated recently when Ghana deployed a 54-member engineering contingent to Jamaica to assist with reconstruction efforts following the devastation of Hurricane Melissa .
A key highlight of the visit is President Mahama’s participation in a Reparations Dialogue at the University of the West Indies (UWI) on Monday, where he will advance the global campaign for reparatory justice alongside UWI Vice-Chancellor Sir Hilary Beckles . The following day, President Mahama will make history by becoming the first Ghanaian President to address a joint sitting of Jamaica’s Parliament . He will also lay a wreath at the shrine of National Hero Marcus Garvey at National Heroes Park .
Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who arrived ahead of the President for preparatory talks, emphasized the significance of the visit, stating that President Mahama is “really excited about this historic state visit” and honoured by the opportunity to address the Jamaican Parliament . The two nations have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in trade, culture, and South-South collaboration, with a shared vision of strengthening the bonds between Africa and its diaspora .
