As Lionel Messi prepares to lead Argentina into a second consecutive World Cup final, one of England’s most decorated defenders has delivered a definitive verdict on football’s enduring greatest-of-all-time debate: there was never really a contest.
Former Chelsea and England captain John Terry, speaking after Argentina’s 2-1 semi-final victory over England, insisted that Messi had always been ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo — and that the 39-year-old’s breathtaking performances at the 2026 World Cup have only cemented that belief for those who may have doubted it.
“For me, I don’t think it ever was a debate. I still think it’s Messi regardless of the outcome in the World Cup final,” Terry said on Sports Uncensored. “But watching him at 39 years of age last night, honestly, I would have paid to watch that last night. Absolutely incredible”.
A Masterclass That Settled the Argument
Terry’s comments came after Messi delivered a virtuoso performance against England at the World Cup semi-final, providing two assists as Argentina came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory. The Argentine captain has now scored eight goals and provided four assists in the tournament, jointly leading the scoring charts.
With 33 goal contributions in World Cup history, Messi has secured first place on the all-time list, surpassing every star who has participated in the tournament over the past decades.
Taking to Instagram after the match, Terry wrote: “Watching this man yesterday at 39 was incredible. The Best Ever and still doing it at the very top”.
“I get asked this a lot: ‘How do you stop Messi?'” Terry added. “You can’t. And being physical with him just makes him better. So strong and loves the fight, this man has everything”.
The Piers Morgan Factor
The debate was reignited earlier in the tournament when outspoken broadcaster Piers Morgan, a known admirer of Cristiano Ronaldo, appeared on his show Piers Morgan Uncensored alongside Terry. Morgan argued that Messi was not even Argentina’s greatest player, insisting Diego Maradona was superior.
“He went to Napoli when they’d never won anything, and won Serie A twice in four years. He won the World Cup with Argentina. Maradona was absolutely sensational,” Morgan argued.
Terry, who faced both Messi and Ronaldo during his career, defended the Argentine passionately, recalling his experiences on the pitch.
“Believe me, I’ve kicked him, I’ve pulled him, I’ve punched him in the side. He bounces up and he’s very much up for that fight,” Terry said, dismissing suggestions of Messi’s physical fragility. “Ideally, he doesn’t want to get into that, but when you do it, it actually makes him a little bit more fiery when he gets the ball”.
A Debate Tilted Forever
The Messi-Ronaldo debate began to tilt heavily in Messi’s favour after Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph. His extraordinary performances at 39 have only widened that gap.
Graeme Souness, the former Liverpool midfielder, was equally full of praise, describing Messi as a “freak” after the semi-final.
“He’s a freak. Some of those balls, left foot into the box. They should have scored two goals off it,” Souness said.
What Sunday Holds
Argentina will face Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday in New Jersey. Should Messi lead his country to back-to-back titles — a feat not achieved in 64 years — many believe the GOAT debate will be laid to rest once and for all.
For Terry, the outcome of the final is irrelevant to his judgment.
“Regardless of the outcome in the World Cup final, it was certainly cemented for a lot of people,” he said.
Lionel Messi, 39, has scored 21 World Cup goals and provided 12 assists across a record six tournaments. Argentina are seeking to become the first team to win back-to-back World Cups since Brazil in 1962.
