A 20-year-old Lionel Messi, painfully introverted and unsure how to hold a baby, stares down at a five-month-old infant splashing in a blue plastic tub.The child is blissfully oblivious that the hands stabilising him belong to the man who would one day redefine football. Fast-forward 19 years, and that same baby is standing on the opposite side of the pitch in a World Cup final.
This is the story of Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal — a tale of fate, football and the most poetic symmetry the sport has ever seen.
December 2007: A charity shoot at Camp Nou
The now-iconic photograph was taken in December 2007 at Camp Nou, Barcelona’s hallowed stadium. At the time, Messi was a rising star — just 20 years old, already a two-time LaLiga winner and a UEFA Champions League victor, but still wearing Barcelona’s No. 19 shirt.
The shoot was organised by the FC Barcelona Foundation, UNICEF and Catalan newspaper Diario Sport for a 2008 charity calendar.Local families entered a raffle for a chance to have their picture taken with a Barça player at the stadium. The winning family? The Yamals — 16-year-old mother Sheila Ebana, father Mounir Nasraoui, and their five-month-old son Lamine.
Photographer Joan Monfort set up the shoot in the away dressing room at Camp Nou.”Messi is a pretty introverted guy, he’s shy,” Monfort later recalled.”He was coming out of the locker room and suddenly he finds himself in another locker room with a plastic tub full of water and a baby in it. It was complicated. He didn’t even know how to hold him at first.”
With assistance from Yamal’s mother, Messi gently bathed the infant — a tender moment captured forever. The image was used to illustrate the month of January in the 2008 calendar. And there it remained, dormant, for almost two decades.
2024: The photograph resurfaces
The photo might have stayed forgotten forever. But in 2024, during the European Championship, Yamal exploded onto the global stage. At just 16, he became the youngest goalscorer in Euros history with a stunning strike against France.
It was then that Yamal’s father shared the photograph on social media with a caption that would prove prophetic: “The beginning of two legends.”The internet went wild. Monfort himself confirmed that the baby was indeed Yamal.
When shown the photograph after Spain secured their place in the World Cup final, Yamal smiled and said: “I hope to face him in a final.”
That hope is now reality.
Two legends, one path
The connection runs deeper than a single photograph. Both men emerged from Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy — the same production line that yielded Xavi, Iniesta and Puyol.Messi joined at 13, debuted at 17. Yamal entered at seven, debuted at 15 — the youngest player of the 21st century to wear the Barça shirt.
And in a twist that feels almost deliberate, Yamal inherited the iconic No. 10 shirt that Messi made his own for nearly two decades. It is the age-old story of master and apprentice — of the hero who, without knowing it, trained the man he would one day have to face.
The final: 39 vs 19
On Sunday, they will meet at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Messi, now 39, is playing in his third World Cup final. He has already scored 8 goals and provided 4 assists in this tournament, cementing his status as both the World Cup’s all-time top scorer (21 goals) and its greatest assist provider.Against England in the semi-final, he delivered two majestic assists — including a glorious right-foot cross for Lautaro Martínez’s 92nd-minute winner.
Yamal, now 19, has been equally breathtaking. He scored his first World Cup goal against Saudi Arabia, becoming Spain’s second-youngest ever World Cup scorer. In the semi-final against France, his relentless pressing forced the game-opening penalty. He has already won the European Championship and broken records across La Liga, the Champions League and the national team.
A cosmic setup
“This is the first World Cup final between two Spanish-speaking national teams since 1930,”but the story is about so much more than language.
As one commentator put it: “It is the literal prologue to the ultimate passing of the torch.”On one side, the magnificent twilight of an absolute master. On the other, a teenager who has shattered every developmental timeline.
From a charity shoot in a Camp Nou dressing room to the World Cup final. From a shy 20-year-old unsure how to hold a baby to a 39-year-old legend facing the child he once bathed.
Life is beautiful. Football is beautiful.
And on Sunday, the prophecy written 19 years ago finally reaches its chapter.
