Turkish Super Lig giants Fenerbahçe have reached an agreement with Olympique Marseille to sign English winger Mason Greenwood for €40 million (£34m) plus €2m in add-ons, according to Turkish journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu. The 24-year-old is set to sign a contract until June 2030, with a reported net salary of €10 million per year.

However, a late twist has emerged. Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli made a direct call to Greenwood on Sunday in an attempt to hijack the deal. Al-Ahli manager Matthias Jaissle spoke personally with the player to gauge his interest in a move to Saudi Arabia. Despite this, Fenerbahçe remain confident and are pushing to finalize the transfer quickly.

Manchester United to Receive Major Windfall

Manchester United, who sold Greenwood to Marseille in July 2024 for £26.7 million, negotiated a sell-on clause believed to be between 40% and 50%. As a result, the Red Devils are set to pocket over €10 million (£8.5m) from the deal, with some reports suggesting the figure could reach €14 million.

United also held a matching-rights clause but never considered activating it. The club had made it clear to Greenwood in 2024 that he had no future at Old Trafford, and that position has not changed.

Greenwood’s Resurgence at Marseille

Greenwood joined Marseille after a loan spell at Getafe and has been nothing short of sensational in Ligue 1. Over two seasons, he scored 48 goals and provided 17 assists in 81 appearances across all competitions. In the 2025/26 season alone, he registered 16 goals and 7 assists in 32 Ligue 1 matches, plus 3 goals in 8 Champions League appearances.

His form attracted interest from Atlético Madrid, Roma, Tottenham, Galatasaray, and Juventus. Former Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi even backed him to win the Ballon d’Or.

Fenerbahçe’s Statement Signing

For Fenerbahçe, this represents one of the biggest transfers in club history. Club directors Cihan Kamer and Oğuz Çetin are currently in Marseille to finalize the paperwork, with Greenwood expected to travel to Istanbul for a medical and formal unveiling imminently.

A special signing ceremony has reportedly been planned. Upon arrival, Greenwood will reunite with former Manchester United teammates Fred and Sofyan Amrabat.

A Controversial Career Rebuilt

Greenwood, born October 1, 2001, in Bradford, England, rose through Manchester United’s academy and was once considered the club’s brightest prospect. His career was derailed in January 2022 when he was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. All charges were dropped in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew.

After an internal investigation, United decided he would not return, sending him on loan to Getafe before his permanent sale to Marseille. Now, two prolific seasons later, Greenwood is set for a new chapter in Istanbul — unless Al-Ahli can pull off a dramatic late hijack.
