Hip-hop history was written in bold letters on Saturday night as Jay-Z brought out a cavalcade of legends for the second night of his three-night residency at Yankee Stadium. But it was Eminem’s wardrobe choice that sent an equally powerful message to the true heads in the crowd.
The Detroit rap icon, who made a surprise appearance during Hov’s celebration of The Blueprint’s 25th anniversary, took the stage in a vintage Kool G Rap & DJ Polo T-shirt featuring the iconic graphics from the duo’s debut studio album, Road to the Riches, originally released in 1989.
For the uninitiated, the choice was more than mere nostalgia—it was a masterclass in hip-hop lineage.
A Shirt Steeped in Queens History
Kool G Rap (born Nathaniel Wilson) and DJ Polo (born Thomas Pough) formed their legendary partnership in the mid-1980s after being introduced through Eric B.. The duo quickly became cornerstone members of the Juice Crew, the seminal collective led by super-producer Marley Marl. Both G Rap and Polo hailed from Queens, New York, making the shirt’s tribute to the borough’s foundational hip-hop scene a perfect fit for a night celebrating New York’s finest.
Road to the Riches, produced entirely by Marley Marl and released on Cold Chillin’ Records, is widely regarded as one of the blueprints for the mafioso rap trend that would dominate the genre in the years that followed. The album showcased Kool G Rap’s signature multisyllabic rhyme style, with lyrical themes ranging from crime and materialism to love. It featured underground classics like “Poison” and “It’s a Demo”.
The duo’s influence on Eminem is well-documented—the technical precision and gritty storytelling of Kool G Rap helped shape the rapid-fire, complex rhyme schemes that would become Slim Shady’s trademark.
A Night of Legendary Collaborations
Saturday’s concert, dubbed “JAŸ-Z 25” in commemoration of his sixth studio album, featured a tightly curated 90-minute set. Jay-Z opened the night with “The Ruler’s Back,” alongside a surprise appearance from the legendary Slick Rick, who performed “Children’s Story” and “La Di Da Di”. The show also featured a solemn moment acknowledging the lives lost on September 11, 2001—the very day The Blueprint was originally released.
When Eminem emerged, the crowd erupted. The two rap titans reunited onstage to perform The Blueprint’s penultimate track, “Renegade”—marking the first time they had played the song live together since their Home & Home Tour in 2010. Em stuck around to deliver a searing performance of his own signature hit, “Lose Yourself,” before Jay-Z closed out the Blueprint portion of the evening with the closing track “Blueprint (Momma Loves Me)”.
More Surprises and Record-Breaking Numbers
The night didn’t end there. Pharrell Williams popped up onstage to perform a medley of his collaborations with Jay-Z, including “Excuse Me Miss,” “I Just Wanna Love U,” “Frontin’,” and “Allure”.
The star-studded crowd included Dave Chappelle, Fat Joe, Joe Budden, LeBron James, Gabrielle Union, Dwyane Wade, and many more. According to a press release, the show sold 45,832 tickets, breaking the concert attendance record at Yankee Stadium set just the night before.
The first night of the residency had already set a high bar, featuring appearances from Beyoncé, Blue Ivy Carter, Nas, Alicia Keys, Memphis Bleek, and Jaz-O. Jay-Z will conclude his Yankee Stadium run with a special “Extra Innings” concert on Sunday, July 12, before taking the celebration to London, Paris, and Los Angeles later this year.
A Tribute That Speaks Volumes
As Eminem traded verses with Jay-Z on “Renegade,” his Kool G Rap & DJ Polo shirt served as a quiet but powerful reminder of the shoulders upon which today’s hip-hop giants stand. Nearly 25 years after “Renegade” first brought Jay and Em together, and nearly 40 years after Kool G Rap & DJ Polo first linked up in Queens, the lineage of hip-hop royalty remains as strong as ever.
In the end, it wasn’t just a concert—it was a living history lesson, worn proudly on Eminem’s chest for all 45,832 fans to see.
