Didier Deschamps officially brought down the curtain on his 14-year tenure as France manager following a dramatic 6-4 defeat to England in the 2026 World Cup third-place play-off, signing off with a poignant and emotionally charged final press conference.
The 57-year-old, who first pulled on the France jersey as a player in 1989 and went on to captain the side to World Cup glory in 1998, reflected on a relationship with Les Bleus that spanned a quarter of a century. “I hear a lot of thank-yous, and I thank everyone—my staff, and everyone who contributed to this adventure,” Deschamps said. “I received so many beautiful messages, and the ones from former players touched me deeply.”
Fighting to maintain his composure, he spoke of the jersey that defined his life: “There is nothing more beautiful in a footballer’s life than the France national team jersey. I wore it for 25 years. It is beautiful. Since 2012, I have placed France above everything else. I have always served this country.”
The match itself was a fittingly chaotic finale. France delivered a disastrous first-half display—which Deschamps bluntly described as “nothingness”—before mounting a furious second-half fightback that ultimately fell just short. “I was angry. This was about pride, dignity, and character. We nearly climbed the mountain, but the ending wasn’t kind to us,” he admitted.
When asked if he would shed tears, the stoic coach replied, “I won’t cry in front of you.” Yet he confessed that after receiving “two or three messages” in the dressing room, he “couldn’t hold back the tears.”
Deschamps reserved special praise for his backroom team, stating: “I have a very capable staff. Nothing would have been possible without them.” Looking ahead, he acknowledged the weight of what he was leaving behind: “I know I will miss the France team. Twenty-five years of my life will leave its mark. But I am naturally optimistic—what matters is always what lies ahead.”
The French Football Federation (FFF) paid official tribute in a statement, saying: “Didier Deschamps embodied the highest standards, rigor, collective spirit, and love for the blue shirt. Under his leadership, France restored its credibility, respect, and admiration on the world stage over 14 years, consistently remaining among the elite.”
Captain Kylian Mbappé also took to social media to honor his departing manager: “We are disappointed we couldn’t give him a better send-off… I wish you all the best in your new adventures. Thank you again for everything you did for this shirt, which means so much to us.”
