A quiet evening walk ended in tragedy on Thursday when a well‑known car dealer was shot dead at the entrance of his home in the Beach Drive Estate near Tuba, sending shockwaves through the Ga South Municipality. The victim, Kwasi Rahman, who had just celebrated his 50th birthday in July, was returning from a stroll with his wife when an unidentified gunman opened fire on the couple around 9:30 p.m., killing him instantly.

According to preliminary accounts from neighbours, Mr Rahman and his wife had reached the gate of their residence when the assailant—who remains at large—emerged from the shadows and fired multiple rounds. The wife, who was unharmed but visibly traumatised, raised the alarm moments later. A resident, who spoke to Citi News on condition of anonymity, described the terrifying sequence of events:

“I was outside around 9:50 when I heard what sounded like a gunshot. I quickly went inside and told my mother that I had heard shots. When we came out, we saw people running from down the road. I came to the front of his gate and saw him lying there. I didn’t see anybody else, and I didn’t hear any other noise—just that single shot.”

The body of Mr Rahman lay in a pool of blood at the entrance for nearly an hour before police arrived from the Tuba District Police Command. Officers have since cordoned off the scene and launched an investigation, but no arrests have been made. Spokesperson for the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Juliana Nkrumah, confirmed the incident in a brief statement on Friday, urging the public to remain calm and cooperate with investigators. “We are pursuing several leads, and we assure the family and residents that justice will be served,” she said.

The murder has reignited deep‑seated anxieties about security within the Beach Drive Estate, a gated community that has experienced a spate of violent incidents in recent months. A relative of the deceased, who spoke to Citi News on Friday, did not hide her anger and grief. She called for swift prosecution of the killer, saying, “If the person who killed him is caught, they are supposed to be sentenced and even put in jail because he has to feel the pain of what he caused.”

More pointedly, she accused the estate’s private security contractors of gross negligence. “The security is not tight. The security here is not tight, and any person they employ at the security checkpoint, most of them are drunkards,” she alleged. “This is not the first time. Recently, they shot a certain boy in front of this gate, at the entrance. So the security here is not tight.”

Her claims echo a growing frustration among residents, who say the estate’s security personnel are poorly vetted, often under‑staffed, and lack the training to respond to armed threats. The estate’s management has not yet issued a public response, but a resident committee is reportedly planning to petition the Ga South Municipal Assembly for enhanced police patrols.

Kwasi Rahman was a familiar figure in Tuba’s used‑car trade, operating a dealership that imported vehicles from Europe and the Middle East. Friends and business associates described him as a generous and hard‑working family man who had lived in the estate for over a decade. His sudden death has left his wife, three children, and a broader extended family in profound mourning.

Police have not disclosed a possible motive—whether robbery, a personal vendetta, or mistaken identity. However, investigators are examining CCTV footage from neighbouring homes and interviewing residents who may have seen a suspicious vehicle or person near the estate earlier in the evening.

The incident comes amid a broader uptick in armed robberies and violent crime in peri‑urban areas of the Greater Accra Region, where rapid development has often outpaced the deployment of security infrastructure. According to the Ghana Police Service’s 2025 crime report, the Ga South Municipality recorded a 12% rise in gun‑related offences compared to the previous year, with many attacks occurring in residential enclaves that lack adequate street lighting and surveillance.

As the family prepares for burial arrangements, the Tuba community is left grappling with fear and unanswered questions. “We used to feel safe here,” said another neighbour who requested anonymity. “Now, I lock my doors before sunset. If a man can be shot at his own gate with his wife beside him, none of us is safe.”

The Ghana Police Service has urged anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Tuba District Police Command or the national emergency hotline 191. Meanwhile, residents are planning a vigil on Saturday evening to demand improved security and justice for Kwasi Rahman.
