Veteran broadcast journalist Blessed Godsbrain Smart, widely known by his moniker “Captain Smart,” has officially tendered his resignation from Media General Limited—the parent company of Onua TV and Onua FM—effective immediately, as he pivots to a full-time political career.
The development, confirmed by multiple sources within the media house on Saturday, marks the end of a prominent chapter in Ghanaian broadcast journalism. Captain Smart is set to contest the Member of Parliament seat for the Gomoa West Constituency in the Central Region on the ticket of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming general elections.
From the Studio to the Campaign Trail
Captain Smart, whose hard-hitting, confrontational style on his flagship morning programme, Maakye, earned him both acclaim and controversy, has long been a vocal critic of governance failures, corruption, and social injustice. Over the years, his investigative exposes on the Onua platform gave him a loyal grassroots following, particularly among the urban poor and rural voters who saw him as a champion of the voiceless.
In a parting letter addressed to management, the journalist expressed profound gratitude to Media General for providing him with a platform to serve the nation over the years. However, he noted that his decision to step down was driven by a conviction that his advocacy for accountability could be more impactful from the legislative floor.
“After years of holding the powerful to account, I believe the time has come to translate that duty into actionable policy and representation,” Captain Smart stated in a brief audio message circulated to colleagues. “I am not leaving journalism; I am expanding my service to the people of Gomoa West, whom I am ready to defend with the same fearlessness I brought to the airwaves.”
A Challenging Political Terrain
Gomoa West, a coastal constituency in the Central Region, is considered a marginal seat with a history of competitive elections. It is currently held by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), and the NDC views Captain Smart’s high-profile brand and media pedigree as a strategic asset to reclaim the seat.
Political analysts note that his name recognition and ability to connect with the masses could significantly boost the NDC’s grassroots mobilisation efforts. However, critics have questioned whether his combative media persona will translate effectively into the diplomatic compromises required of a legislator.
Media General Reacts
A senior executive at Media General, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the resignation was a voluntary move and that the station had accepted it with mixed emotions.
“Captain Smart has been a giant in our newsroom. His departure is a loss, but we respect his political ambitions and wish him well,” the source said. The station has yet to announce a replacement for his popular morning show, which consistently ranked among the highest-rated radio programmes in the Greater Accra and Central regions.
A Long-Awaited Move
Speculation about Captain Smart’s political ambitions had been rife for months. He had intermittently hinted on air about the need for journalists to transition into active governance, while simultaneously testing the waters with community engagements in Gomoa West. His formal resignation now clears the path for him to file his nomination papers with the NDC’s constituency executive committee ahead of the party’s primaries.
While he is yet to publicly announce a running mate or campaign strategy, insiders say he intends to leverage his media network to run a data-driven, visibility-heavy campaign, challenging the incumbents on development deficits, especially in the areas of fishing infrastructure, roads, and education.
As he trades the microphone for the microphone of Parliament, Captain Smart’s transition underscores a growing trend in Ghanaian politics—where prominent media personalities are increasingly crossing the divide to seek elective office. Whether his firebrand style will win him the seat or alienate the political establishment remains to be seen. But as he often told his listeners: “The proof is always in the pudding.”
