In a moment that transcended one of football’s fiercest rivalries, Brazilian World Cup winner Rivaldo took to Instagram on Tuesday night to shower praise on Lionel Messi and Argentina following their dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt in the World Cup Round of 16.
The 2002 World Cup champion, who formed one-third of the legendary “R’s” trio alongside Ronaldo and Ronaldinho that lifted the trophy in Korea and Japan, did not hide his admiration for the defending champions’ resilience after they overturned a two-goal deficit in Atlanta.
‘What Grit, What a Will to Win’
“What a fighting spirit, what a desire to win, what a battle and dedication from everyone! This is exactly what the fan expects from his team in the World Cup,” Rivaldo wrote on Instagram.
He reserved special praise for the 39-year-old Argentine captain, who was instrumental in the comeback despite a first-half penalty miss that could have broken lesser men.
“As for talking about Leo Messi, it’s a given. What a player! At 39 years old, playing his sixth World Cup in his career, he still shows the same passion for the Argentina jersey; he celebrates, he fights, he cries, and once again he is the decisive player,” Rivaldo posted.
A Rival’s Respect
The Brazilian great acknowledged the historic rivalry between the two South American nations while paying tribute to Argentina’s display – a gesture that resonated deeply with fans across the continent.
“I am Brazilian, I love my country, and I will always cheer for the Brazilian national team. Competition is part of football, but I also know how to appreciate and admire when I watch a great match and a team that gives everything it has on the field,” he wrote.
“Matches like these elevate the value of football, and they are worthy of the World Cup. Congratulations to Argentina on qualifying.”
The Comeback That Stunned the World
Argentina looked destined for a shock exit after Yasser Ibrahim’s first-half header and Mostafa Ziko’s 67th-minute strike gave Egypt a 2-0 advantage.
Messi endured a frustrating opening period, seeing his 19th-minute penalty saved by Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir, who produced a string of outstanding stops to keep the reigning champions at bay.
But with Argentina’s title defence hanging by a thread, the momentum shifted dramatically in the 79th minute when Cristian Romero headed home a pinpoint delivery from Messi to reduce the deficit. Just four minutes later, Messi levelled the contest with a powerful strike, and in stoppage time, Enzo Fernandez completed the turnaround with a dramatic winner to seal a 3-2 victory.
Messi’s Record-Breaking Night
The equaliser further enhanced Messi’s remarkable World Cup legacy. The Argentina captain became the first player in history to score in nine consecutive FIFA World Cup matches and took his tally in the ongoing tournament to eight goals – his best return in a single World Cup edition.
The strike also extended Messi’s all-time World Cup record to 21 goals. According to Opta, he became the first player to score in six successive World Cup knockout matches.
A Rivalry Set Aside
For a Brazilian football icon to publicly celebrate Argentina’s success is a rare and significant moment. The rivalry between Brazil and Argentina is one of the most intense in world sport, dating back nearly a century and encompassing countless battles on the pitch.
Rivaldo’s words carried particular weight given his own legendary status. As a key member of Brazil’s 2002 World Cup-winning side, he knows exactly what it takes to lift football’s greatest prize. His willingness to set aside national rivalry and acknowledge greatness speaks to the universal appeal of the beautiful game – and the respect that extraordinary performances command, regardless of the jersey worn.
What Lies Ahead
Argentina’s victory books a quarter-final clash with Switzerland in Kansas City on Sunday, as the defending champions continue their pursuit of back-to-back FIFA World Cup titles.
For now, the football world – including at least one of Brazil’s all-time greats – is united in applauding a comeback for the ages, and a 39-year-old magician who refuses to stop writing his story.
