Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has commended Regional Chairmen of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their dedication and unwavering commitment to the Party’s ideals, urging them to intensify grassroots engagement and highlight the significant progress being made under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.
The Vice President met with the Regional Chairmen earlier today at the Flagstaff House in Accra, where she expressed profound appreciation for their tireless efforts in mobilising support and maintaining the Party’s connection with communities across all sixteen regions.
“Our Regional Chairmen are the backbone of this Party. Your dedication to the ideals of the NDC and your unwavering commitment to the welfare of the Ghanaian people do not go unnoticed,” Vice President Opoku-Agyemang told the gathering. “I commend each of you for the sacrifices you continue to make in service to our great Party and our nation.”
Delivering the President’s Message
Speaking on behalf of President Mahama, the Vice President outlined the government’s major interventions across key sectors, reiterating the administration’s determination to improve the lives of all Ghanaians through targeted policies and investments.
Education: Recruiting Teachers and Expanding Access
The Vice President highlighted the government’s commitment to clearing the backlog of unemployed graduate teachers, announcing that financial clearance has been granted for the recruitment of at least 16,000 newly trained teachers into the public education system.
“We are clearing the backlog of your seniors who have completed their training and are waiting to be employed,” she explained. “Our aim is to ensure that when you complete your studies, you will not have to wait unnecessarily before opportunities are created for you to contribute to the development of Ghana.”
She further noted that government is investing in hostels, infrastructure and other facilities across all colleges of education to improve the quality of teaching, learning and overall educational outcomes.
Additionally, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang reaffirmed the government’s commitment to abolishing the double-track system in senior high schools by the end of 2026 through the Ghana Secondary Learning Improvement Project (GSLIP). She disclosed that 100 schools have already reverted to single-track operations, while the government is upgrading 30 Category C senior high schools to Category B schools and completing 30 abandoned e-blocks across the country to increase capacity.
Healthcare: Free Primary Healthcare and 16,000 New Nurses
On healthcare, the Vice President highlighted the government’s flagship Free Primary Healthcare Programme, which removes financial barriers to basic healthcare services at polyclinics, health centres and CHPS compounds.
She announced that the government has granted clearance for the recruitment of 16,000 nurses in two phases, with the first batch of 8,000 nurses to be deployed to underserved communities where healthcare needs are greatest.
The Vice President further outlined ongoing investments in healthcare infrastructure, including new cardiac centres, upgrades to the Ho Teaching Hospital, and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund—popularly known as “Mahama Cares”—which supports patients living with serious non-communicable diseases including cancers, kidney diseases and cardiovascular conditions.
Roads and Infrastructure: The Big Push Programme
The Vice President provided an update on the government’s flagship Big Push infrastructure programme, disclosing that more than GH¢40 billion has been committed towards repairing and improving roads across the country.
“Government and taxpayers are committing substantial resources to these projects because we recognise the importance of good roads in transforming the economy and improving the lives of our people,” she stated.
She noted that work is currently ongoing simultaneously across the country on approximately 2,500 kilometres of roads, most of which are major highways connecting regional capitals and other important economic centres that had been left in a state of serious disrepair over the years.
In the Volta Region alone, the Penyi-Denu Road has reached 75.68 percent completion, making it the most advanced project under the Big Push programme.
Markets and Economic Interventions
The Vice President also highlighted the government’s commitment to boosting local commerce through the construction of 24-Hour Economy Model Markets. She noted that 18 such markets are being constructed across all districts in the Volta Region as part of efforts to expand market infrastructure and support economic activity.
She further announced that government has allocated GH¢30.8 billion in 2026 for the Big Push infrastructure programme—representing a massive increase from the $13 billion invested in 2025—to cover improvements in roads, rail, aviation, health, education, agribusiness and manufacturing infrastructure across the country.
“This will see massive improvements in our road network, in rail, in aviation, in health, in education, in agribusiness, and manufacturing,” Vice President Opoku-Agyemang said.
Call to Action
Addressing the Regional Chairmen directly, the Vice President encouraged them to continue engaging their constituencies and sharing the progress Government is making under President Mahama’s leadership.
“Go out there and tell the Ghanaian people what this government is doing for them,” she urged. “From the teacher who will finally receive his posting, to the mother who can now access free primary healthcare for her child, to the farmer who will benefit from improved roads connecting his produce to the market—these are the stories that must be told.”
The meeting ended with the Regional Chairmen expressing their appreciation to the Vice President for her engagement and reaffirming their commitment to supporting the government’s development agenda.
The NDC Regional Chairmen present at the meeting represented all sixteen regions of Ghana. The engagement forms part of ongoing efforts by the presidency and party leadership to strengthen coordination and ensure effective communication of government policies to the grassroots.
