The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) has appointed Slaven Bilić as the new head coach of the national team, bringing the 57-year-old back for a second stint in the role he previously held from 2006 to 2012. Bilić replaces Zlatko Dalić, who stepped down after nearly nine years in charge following Croatia’s round-of-32 exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Dalić’s Departure Ends Historic Era
Dalić, Croatia’s most successful coach, resigned last week after the side’s 2-1 defeat to Portugal in Toronto. His tenure included a runner-up finish at the 2018 World Cup and a third-place finish in 2022. “I leave with a fulfilled heart, proud of my contribution to the greatest successes of Croatian soccer in history,” Dalić said in his farewell statement. The federation called his time at the helm an “unforgettable journey”.
Bilić’s Return
The HNS Executive Committee unanimously approved Bilić’s appointment on Monday. “I have complete confidence in our players, and it is my responsibility to bring energy, ambition and determination to ensure that Croatia remains among football’s elite,” Bilić said. “I am genuinely happy to start this challenge and I feel fully prepared for it – as a more mature and experienced coach than in 2006, yet with the same motivation and desire to see Croatia stay powerful, bold, and successful”.
During his first spell, Bilić recorded 42 wins, 15 draws, and eight defeats from 65 matches. He has since managed Besiktas, West Ham United, West Bromwich Albion, and Watford, with his most recent role at Saudi club Al-Fateh during the 2023-24 season.

Prior to the World Cup, Bilić had emerged as a frontrunner for the Ghana Black Stars job, holding direct discussions with the Ghana Football Association after the dismissal of Otto Addo. However, Ghana ultimately appointed Carlos Queiroz, clearing the way for Bilić’s return to his homeland.
His immediate task will be to guide Croatia through Euro 2028 qualifying.
