The National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) has been tasked with tracking and assessing the implementation of the government’s flagship “New Economy” programme, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has announced.
The revelation came during a working engagement on Monday, September 7, 2026, between the Finance Minister and the Commission’s leadership, chaired by Dr. Nii Moi Thompson . Dr. Forson described the NDPC as a critical stakeholder whose involvement will be pivotal to the programme’s successful rollout. The Commission is now poised to monitor progress and evaluate the status of the initiative as it is implemented .
A New Phase of Economic Transformation
The announcement comes ahead of the unveiling of the full details of the New Economy programme, which is expected to be presented in the 2027 Budget Statement in November . Speaking during the presentation of the 2026 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review, Dr. Forson emphasised that the government’s ambition is to move beyond mere economic stabilisation towards increased production, job creation, and wealth generation.
“Through the New Economy agenda that we will unveil, we will build an economy that does not merely withstand shocks but creates jobs, generates wealth and grows on the strength of what Ghana produces,” he stated .
Dr. Forson stressed that restoring macroeconomic stability was a necessary first step, rather than the final goal. “Stabilisation was never the destination. It was the price of entry. Ghana has paid that price. What comes next is the work that changes lives at scale, the work of transformation,” he said .
A US$10 Billion Investment Agenda
President John Dramani Mahama has since announced that the programme will involve a US2.5 billion annually . Agriculture and agro-processing are expected to receive the largest share, accounting for 50 per cent of the total investment . The programme follows the successful completion of Ghana’s US$3 billion IMF Extended Credit Facility, which ended in 2026, and is designed to build resilience and drive development .
NDPC’s Expanded Role
The NDPC, established under Articles 86 and 87 of the 1992 Constitution, is responsible for advising government on development planning and evaluating policies. Chairman Dr. Nii Moi Thompson has previously indicated plans to digitise government performance tracking, allowing for real-time “civic auditing” of projects and policies by citizens . This new mandate to monitor the New Economy programme reinforces the Commission’s role in ensuring accountability and results-oriented governance.
