Morgan Rogers has officially entered football’s most exclusive financial bracket. The Aston Villa and England attacking midfielder is on the verge of completing a €137 million (£117m) move to Chelsea, making him the fifth most expensive player in football history.
The 23-year-old, currently with the England squad in the United States for Saturday’s World Cup third-place play-off against France, will undergo a medical on Monday before signing a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with an option for a further 12 months.
The All-Time Top 10
Rogers’ blockbuster deal reshuffles the global transfer rankings:
- 🇧🇷 Neymar — €222M (Barcelona → PSG, 2017)
- 🇫🇷 Kylian Mbappé — €180M (Monaco → PSG, 2018)
- 🇫🇷 Ousmane Dembélé — €148M (Borussia Dortmund → Barcelona, 2017)
- 🇸🇪 Alexander Isak — €145M (Newcastle → Liverpool, 2026)
- 🏴 Morgan Rogers — €137M (Aston Villa → Chelsea, 2026) ⭐️
- 🏴 Elliot Anderson — €135M (Nottingham Forest → Manchester City, 2026)
- 🇧🇷 Philippe Coutinho — €135M (Liverpool → Barcelona, 2018)
- 🇵🇹 João Félix — €127.2M (Benfica → Atlético Madrid, 2019)
- 🏴 Jude Bellingham — €127M (Borussia Dortmund → Real Madrid, 2023)
- 🇩🇪 Florian Wirtz — €125M (Bayer Leverkusen → Manchester City, 2026)
A Record-Breaking Deal
The agreement, negotiated directly between Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali and his Villa counterpart Nassef Sawiris, shatters multiple records:
· Most expensive British player of all time, surpassing the £116m Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer
· Chelsea’s club-record signing, exceeding the £115m paid for Moisés Caicedo in 2023 and the £107m for Enzo Fernández
· The €137m fee surpasses the €121m Chelsea paid Benfica for Fernández in January 2023
New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, appointed in May, played an instrumental role in convincing Rogers to choose Stamford Bridge over Arsenal — who had made the England international their top forward target. PSG, Bayern Munich and Liverpool were also linked but put off by Villa’s initial €158m asking price.
The Rise of Morgan Rogers
Rogers’ journey to the top of football’s financial pyramid has been remarkable. Villa signed him from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for an initial £7m plus £8m in add-ons. That deal included a 20 per cent sell-on clause for Middlesbrough, who are now set to land a £15m windfall.
In just over two years at Villa Park, Rogers has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most in-form attacking midfielders:
· 125 appearances, 31 goals and 29 assists for Villa
· 55 appearances in 2025-26, with 14 goals and 12 assists
· Instrumental in Villa’s Europa League triumph and Champions League qualification
· 21 senior England caps, featuring in all six World Cup games
· Set up Anthony Gordon’s opening goal in England’s semi-final defeat to Argentina
A Summer of Change
For Aston Villa, Rogers’ departure represents the biggest blow in a nightmare summer window. They have already lost Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, with Lucas Digne poised to join PSG. Villa have reinvested部分 funds in Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for a potential €70m, while also closing in on Joao Gomes and Pervis Estupinan.
For Chelsea, the deal signals Alonso’s intent to rebuild after a disappointing season. Rogers becomes their sixth summer signing, joining Marco Palestra, Geovany Quenda, Emmanuel Emegha, Denner, Dastan Satpaev and Valentin Barco.
One thing is certain: Morgan Rogers has arrived among football’s financial elite. Now, the challenge is to justify the price tag.
