– Didier Deschamps and the French Football Federation have hit a major setback on the eve of their World Cup quarter-final clash with Morocco. FIFA has officially dismissed France’s appeal to rescind the yellow card shown to Michael Olise during their Round of 16 victory over Paraguay, leaving the tournament’s leading assist provider walking a disciplinary tightrope.

“There was no change when it comes to Olise’s yellow card. We received FIFA’s decision this morning that the yellow card was maintained,” Deschamps told reporters at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.

The decision means Olise will be available to face Morocco on Thursday – but another yellow card would rule him out of a potential semi-final should France advance.

A Controversial Booking

The 24-year-old Bayern Munich attacker was booked in the 97th minute of France’s 1-0 win over Paraguay in Philadelphia. The incident involved an altercation with Paraguay midfielder Matías Galarza, who fell to the ground holding his face – though video replays appeared to show Olise only grasping Galarza’s jersey before the Paraguayan toppled to the grass. Television images clearly showed Olise did not touch his opponent’s face at all.

Uzbek referee Ilgiz Tantashev produced the yellow card – his only booking of the entire match, despite Paraguay’s physical approach throughout.

France’s Appeal and the Balogun Contrast

The FFF lodged a formal appeal arguing the caution was based on a clear refereeing error – similar to the case of United States striker Folarin Balogun, whose suspension was lifted by FIFA last week after a personal phone call from President Donald Trump to FIFA chief Gianni Infantino.

That precedent only sharpened French frustration. “Manifestly, Donald Trump didn’t want to do anything for them,” noted French media.

Three French Players Under Threat

Olise is not alone. Midfielder Manu Koné and forward Bradley Barcola were also booked in the Paraguay match and face the same suspension risk.

For Morocco, the stakes are even higher. The Atlas Lions have five players carrying yellow cards into the quarter-final – captain Achraf Hakimi, Issa Diop, Azzedine Ounahi, Redouane Halhal, and Bilal El Khannouss.

Olise’s Importance to France

Losing Olise would be a significant blow. He has provided five assists in the tournament and has been one of France’s most influential attacking outlets. Deschamps confirmed the rest of the squad is fit, including Kylian Mbappé, who is “focused on tomorrow’s game” and Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni, who may return from a groin injury.

France are chasing a third consecutive World Cup semi-final – a feat achieved only by Germany and Brazil.

The quarter-final kicks off at Boston’s Gillette Stadium on Thursday, July 9. For Olise, every tackle, every challenge, and every moment of the match will carry an extra weight – one that could determine not just France’s fate, but his own place in the semi-finals.
