In a landmark decision that bridges American sporting tradition with global football, FIFA has announced that the winners of the 2026 World Cup will receive custom championship rings for the first time in the tournament’s 96-year history.

The announcement comes just days before Sunday’s final between defending champions Argentina and Spain at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford,New Jersey.

A New Symbol of Glory

Alongside the iconic World Cup trophy and gold medals, the victorious team will be presented with bespoke championship rings—a move FIFA says is designed to incorporate elements of North American sporting culture into the first World Cup co-hosted by three nations.

The tradition of awarding championship rings has long been a staple of American professional sports, with Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees first presenting rings to their players after winning the 1927 World Series. FIFA’s decision marks the first time such an award has been introduced at a FIFA competition.

Limited Edition: 2,026 Individually Numbered Rings

A total of 2,026 individually numbered rings have been produced to commemorate the 2026 tournament. Of these:

· 30 rings will be reserved for the World Cup-winning team, including players and coaching staff
· 1,996 rings will be made available to fans worldwide as official licensed products

Each ring will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and custom-fitted to its recipient.

Design: Trophy Meets National Identity

The championship rings feature a striking dual-sided design.

One side proudly displays the FIFA World Cup trophy.

The opposite side will be customised to reflect the identity, colours and symbols of the winning nation.

Every ring is individually numbered, custom-fitted and delivered with its own certificate of authenticity.

Presentation Ceremony

Immediately after Sunday’s final, the winning team’s captain and head coach will receive temporary rings during the on-field celebrations.

The 30 championship rings for the winning squad will then undergo individual customisation before being formally presented at a later date.

“A Lasting Symbol of Football Immortality”

FIFA said the bespoke rings will “celebrate the legacy of the tournament and create a lasting symbol of football immortality for the champions”.

The introduction of championship rings adds what FIFA describes as a “distinctly North American element” to its awards presentation, reflecting the long-standing tradition in U.S. professional sports of championship teams receiving commemorative rings alongside their trophies.

A Final for the Ages

Spain and Argentina will contest the World Cup final on Sunday, July 19, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, kick-off at 3:00 PM EDT (8:00 PM BST).

Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić has been appointed to take charge of the match, becoming the first Slovenian to referee a World Cup final.

Whoever lifts the trophy will also make history as the first FIFA World Cup champions to receive championship rings—a new tradition born on American soil.
