Canadian rapper Drake has plenty to celebrate after his home nation delivered a historic World Cup victory — and a massive payday.

The Grammy-winning artist walked away with more than 770,000** wager on Canada to advance, with the bet returning a total payout of 231,000.

The victory was sealed in dramatic fashion. Midfielder Stephen Eustáquio struck a stunning stoppage-time winner, sending the tournament co-hosts into the Round of 16 for the first time in the country’s World Cup history. For South Africa, the defeat brought an end to Bafana Bafana’s finest-ever World Cup campaign, having reached the knockout stage for the first time after finishing runners-up in Group A.

A Bet Inspired by Trash Talk

Before kickoff, Drake revealed on Instagram that the high-stakes wager was sparked by a friendly exchange with South African DJ Black Coffee. “@realblackcoffee was chirping in the DM I had to raise the STAKES,” he wrote alongside a screenshot of the bet. Black Coffee responded in the comments, proposing that Drake visit South Africa if Canada lost: “How about we bet on you coming to SA when you lose? Now that’s a real bet”.

Breaking the ‘Drake Curse’

The win also temporarily silenced one of sport’s most enduring superstitions — the so-called “Drake Curse” — which suggests that teams or athletes publicly backed by the rapper often go on to suffer disappointing defeats.

For much of the contest, it appeared the curse might strike again as Canada struggled to break down South Africa’s resilient defence. But Eustáquio’s late heroics ensured Drake finally had a winning moment on the big stage.

A History of High-Stakes Losses

The victory marks a rare success for Drake, who has built a reputation for losing massive wagers on major sporting events. His past defeats include:

· A $1 million bet on Arsenal to beat Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final
· A $1 million wager on the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX
· A $600,000 bet on Barcelona to beat Real Madrid in El Clásico
· A $300,000 wager on Canada to beat Argentina in the Copa América semi-final
· A $700,000 bet on a UFC fight

This time, however, Canada’s late winner ensured the rapper walked away with both a historic football triumph and a seven-figure payout.
