As the countdown to one of the tournament’s most anticipated clashes intensifies, Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has fired a quiet warning to the Spanish camp, insisting his side are fully prepared for the heavyweight encounter.

Speaking on the eve of the knockout tie, the 41-year-old forward struck a confident yet measured tone, acknowledging Spain’s status as title contenders while reaffirming Portugal’s belief in their own ability.

“We will be ready – we know them well,” Ronaldo told reporters. “Spain are among the favourites to win the whole competition, and that respect is earned. But we have our own weapons, our own identity, and we trust what we’ve built.”

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner described the fixture as “very balanced”, refusing to be drawn into predictions of a clear victor.

“On paper, it could go either way. They dominate possession; we are lethal on the transition. It will come down to small details – a set-piece, a moment of individual brilliance, or a mistake. We will see what happens, but I promise you: we will leave everything on that pitch.”

A rivalry renewed

The Iberian neighbours have a storied history of dramatic encounters – from their 3-3 group-stage thriller at the 2018 World Cup, where Ronaldo scored a memorable hat-trick, to more recent Nations League battles. This edition’s Spain side, rejuvenated under their young coach, have impressed with their fluid passing and defensive solidity, while Portugal have leaned on a blend of veteran experience and emerging talent.

Ronaldo, who has netted three times so far in the tournament, will likely be the focal point of Spain’s defensive plans. However, the Al-Nassr star downplayed personal narratives.

“It’s not about me versus Spain – it’s Portugal versus Spain. My role is to lead, to push, and to finish when the chance comes. The younger guys are flying – they take the pressure off me, and that’s how it should be.”

Tactical battle looms

Analysts expect a cagey opening, with Spain’s high press meeting Portugal’s rapid counter-attacking threats through the likes of Rafael Leão and Bernardo Silva. Midfield control will be key, with the duel between Portugal’s defensive anchor and Spain’s creative engine likely to decide the tempo.

Kick-off is set for 9:00 PM local time at the Estadio da Luz, with a capacity crowd expected and millions watching worldwide. For Ronaldo, it could be one of his final major tournament appearances on home soil – a prospect he dismissed with a shrug.

“Every game is a final now. That’s how we treat it. Spain are great – but so are we. Let the best team win.”
