Beatrice Owarewa Siaw, popularly known as Nana Yaa, a member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Council of Patrons and aspiring parliamentary candidate for the Asante Mampong Constituency, has died at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi. She was 70.

The Incident

Reports indicate that Ms Siaw passed away on Saturday, August 8, 2026. According to a source close to her cited by Asaase Radio, she had been preparing to travel to China before her death. Concern grew when attempts to reach her by phone proved unsuccessful. The source then contacted her uncle, who also said he had been unable to reach her.

It later emerged that Ms Siaw had driven herself to KATH after complaining of body weakness. Upon arrival, she reportedly complained of feeling weak and was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. Her vehicle has since been conveyed to a police station as family members await further information. The cause of death has not yet been officially disclosed.

Political Aspirations and Career

Ms Siaw was seeking to contest the Asante Mampong parliamentary seat on the NPP ticket and was also a member of the party’s National Council of Patrons. She was known for her distinctive foreign accent.

During her campaign, she asserted that she had undertaken development projects valued at more than GH¢40 billion in the constituency. “As I mentioned earlier, I have done over 40 billion Ghana cedis’ worth of projects and I’m even doing projects that have never been done before,” she said during a campaign engagement. She attributed her confidence in securing the party’s nod to what she described as her strong connection with grassroots supporters and her humble approach to leadership. “I listen to the people, I love the people… the people believe in me and I also believe in the people to make the right decision to vote for me, to give me the nod. Without them, who am I?” she remarked.

Public Engagements

In April 2026, Ms Siaw expressed concern over the surge in sachet water prices, describing the situation as “disgraceful”. “Water is life. Something that was 10 pesewas, 15 pesewas, even 40 or 50 pesewas, is now climbing to almost one cedi. It’s disgraceful,” she lamented. She argued that if water prices were increasing, wages should also be adjusted to enable citizens to afford basic necessities.

In March 2026, she disclosed that she admired President John Dramani Mahama, noting that it made it “hard to speak against him”.

Philanthropy

Beyond politics, Ms Siaw was known for her philanthropic activities. In January 2025, through her group, Torch Bearers for the Vulnerable and Needy, she donated to the Mampong Babies’ Home to support and encourage the children.

Reactions

Her death has come as a shock to members of the NPP and residents of the Asante Mampong Constituency, where she was known for her political activities and aspirations to represent the constituency in Parliament. An outpouring of condolences is expected from political figures, party supporters, friends, family, and constituents.

Further details surrounding her death are expected from her family and relevant authorities.
